“This was one of the best holidays of my life! The Dhow House is the absolute best spot! We were so spoilt and looked after by the staff. The location is out of this world. I wouldn’t want to holiday on the Kenyan coast anywhere else except at The Dhow House in Kilifi.”

Meghan, South Africa

As you pass through the antique Lamu front doors of the Dhow House, the fabulous infinity pool immediately catches your eye. You enter a spacious courtyard with a bubbling fish pond and then pass into the high-ceilinged Dining Room which looks out over the veranda and across the swimming pool, its waters merging into the panoramic blue views of the Indian Ocean beyond. Here there are expansive baraza seats, wooden ceiling fans and an additional alfresco dining area.

“We have stayed at the beautiful Dhow House a few times and have always had a really enjoyable time. The location on the edge of the coral cliff is fabulous, the house is very stylish and comfortable. The staff are great! A good spot for turtle and dolphin watching too.”

Annie, Nairobi

The Dhow House sits at the top of a small cliff and enjoys uninterrupted sea views, often with sea turtles swimming about in the waves just below the house. Access to the beach is down through a tunnelled stairway, hand-cut through the coral. At the foot of the stairs is a private sandy cove, with rock pools to explore at low tide and excellent swimming, body surfing and snorkelling at certain high tides. At low tide, one can walk a mile or so south to nearby Takaungu Creek. Due to its cliff-top position, the house enjoys cooling sea breezes throughout the year.

“The Dhow House is the perfect getaway. Once you arrive, the friendly staff make you feel at home straight away. Everything is so nicely arranged for you and nice and clean. Not to forget the amazing view, the peaceful sound of the sea crashing against the rocks, and the outstanding food. We loved it!!”

All the rooms in the house are airy and sophisticated, decorated with style and restraint and furnished with traditional Swahili furniture set against white niru plaster walls and decorative zidaka wall niches. There are three light and spacious bedrooms downstairs – two doubles with sea views and one twin-bedded room with a garden view, air-conditioned and ideal for children. The two master bedrooms are upstairs – both have private ocean-view balconies. All bedrooms have large coconut wood beds, mosquito nets and overhead fans, and each has a generous ensuite bathroom with power shower.

“We have just returned from our New Year’s stay at The Dhow House – it is the most amazing house in a stunning location with lovely staff. We saw dolphins and turtles from the cliff top. I cannot recommend this place highly enough.”
