“Mwangati House is simply stunning and we had the best time there – thank you and we would definitely love to stay again!

It ticked all the right boxes – from the setting (wonderful views over the creek watching the full moon rise), the rooms and beautiful decor, the lovely ambiance of the outdoor dining area, to the fabulous pool area and so much more. The staff were great and Charo makes the best fish and chips! His curries and chapatis were also a huge hit, especially as he was really careful to make them mild enough for the children. Special mention also goes to Christine. We loved all her vegetable side dishes and salads.”

Mwangati House is named after the huge spreading Terminalia tree, its wood much prized by traditional Swahili builders for its strength and durability, which stands between the house, its dramatic swimming pool and the sea. It is just one of the many tropical shrubs and trees, including baobab, neem and palm, which fill the green and shady 2-acre plot which is home to this beautiful, welcoming and much-loved private retreat.

At Mwangati House comfortable, colourful and inviting living and dining areas abound inside and out, and there is plenty of room for up to a dozen guests to spread out and relax in private, or to dine and socialise together. On the First Floor is a spacious, airy and panoramic covered veranda with roomy sitting area, bar area with fridge and dining table and chairs.

The two upstairs double ensuite bedrooms also have their own outside and inside built-in baraza sofa seats. Both bedrooms have Emperor-size beds and the central Master Bedroom also has a lovely sculptural tub in its bathroom. In common with all the other bathrooms it has plenty of storage and hanging space. To the rear upstairs is a cosy and private television room with curvy and expansive built-in seating.

Two Ground Floor double ensuite bedrooms have Emperor-size beds and garden and sea views. Two additional ensuite bedrooms look onto the downstairs courtyard to the rear of the house – one has a King-size double bed and one has twin beds. All six bedrooms are air-conditioned and have over-bed fans. The central downstairs living area of the house is beautifully furnished with traditionally upholstered sofas and chairs.

Outside sitting and lounging areas, part open, part covered and part pergola-shaded look out from the house across the garden to the sea. Nearby, with easy access from the well-equipped kitchen, there is a built-in table and benches for alfresco dining and a barbecue with spacious built-in serving area. A breakfast table and chairs sit beneath the mwangati tree looking out across the mouth of the creek to the Indian Ocean.

A notable feature of the property is the lovely, lofty, makuti-thatched pool house, which has its own dining table, bar area with fridge and living area. As with the house’s other open-air sitting and lounging areas, it is well furnished with inviting wooden sofas, chairs and tables and bright coastal kanga cushions. To the rear of the pool house there is a well-shaded petanque court. There are seven poolside sun loungers and, under the clifftop baobab tree, a baraza sofa looking down towards the beach. Access to the beach and sea is by the house’s own private walkway and stairs – here there is also a freshwater shower to wash off the salt and sand.

“We had an arduous journey from Cape Town to Kilifi – but it was more than compensated for by the welcoming staff at Mwangati House.  They were amazing from the moment we arrived until we left – discreet, unobtrusive and their attention-to-detail really makes you feel very special.  Throw the beautiful setting into the mix and we knew we were going to have a special week.  The house has been lovingly renovated and the interior design is worthy of a Conde Nast Traveller feature.  Luxurious, stylish and understated.  The outlook is incredible over the creek and you also have private access steps down to the beach.  No review would be complete without mentioning Charo the chef – he seriously delivered some amazing food to our table. Make sure you get the recipe for the tuna sashimi – no exaggeration, it is of Nobu quality.  If you want to escape from the frantic hustle and bustle of life this is the place, whether you are a small or large group. I will definitely return. Five stars!!”

Kilifi attracts ocean sailors and the creek offers a fabulous deep-water yacht anchorage and is ideal for boating and windsurfing. Larger boats can be hired from the Boatyard about a mile up the creek on the south shore, where there is a pleasant bar and restaurant. Other recommended places to eat are Nautilus on the north shore of the creek and The Food Movement in Kilifi Plantation. Salty’s Kite Surfing on Bofa Beach to the north of the town also has a beach bar and cafe.

Mombasa, Malindi, the ancient ruins at Gedi and the Arabuko Sokoke Forest – all make interesting day trips from Kilifi and all are within about an hour’s drive of the house. There is an excellent golf course at the Vipingo Ridge development about 30 minutes away – the course has been designed and built to the exacting USGA standard and is of international class. It has a spectacular setting, at the top of the ridge overlooking the Indian Ocean.
