“It is hard to know where to begin! Ol Bobongi is hands down one of the nicest places we’ve ever stayed. The house is impeccable. It is huge, meticulously kitted out, and in a location that is convenient to every fun thing that Nanyuki has to offer. Everything about the house is perfect. We were a party of 4 adults and 4 teenagers. There were two rooms with large king size beds, two rooms with large doubles, and one room with two bunk beds, so we all easily and comfortably fit. There is a massive games room with a ping pong table, pool table, fuusball, and large tv linked to Netflix and DSTV. There is – wait for it – ANOTHER purpose-built cinema room also linked to DSTV and home to hundreds of DVDs. The kitchen is almost as big as the downstairs of my house, gorgeous and filled with every appliance, utensil, and tool that you might need. There is a massive verandah where Mt. Kenya – on a clear day :) – is easily visible, two separate outdoor eating areas, a large indoor dining table that easily seats 8 or more people, two libraries, and more bathrooms than I can count. The house is absolutely unbelievable and the pictures don’t even come close to doing it justice. Stephen and Bhavna are the perfect hosts: kind, fascinating, endlessly generous, and eager to share their wealth of knowledge of Laikipia with their guests. Chef Joseph and Damaris are caring, helpful, and so accommodating. The food was fantastic. Everything was kept spotlessly clean. The beds were some of the most comfortable I’ve ever slept in. And there were very thoughtful COVID precautions throughout. We are definitely planning to return. I mean I don’t even want to write a recommendation here because I’m afraid that – if more people know about it – we may never again be able to get a booking. That said: it would be wrong to not share such a special place, experience, and people with the world at large. So do check out Ol Bobongi. It is amazing.”

Set against the backdrop of Mount Kenya on secure and exclusive Mukima Ridge is Ol Bobongi House – an effortlessly elegant and comfortable home with 15 acres of mature landscaped gardens and grounds. It is impeccably finished throughout and boasts charming interior design with high-quality imported furnishings.

Carved Lamu doors open onto the entrance hall which features a water fountain and pond. From here there is access to the gardens and to the “original” and “new” wings of the house. The “original” section features a drawing room with French stone fireplace, an elegant dining room, media room with tv, dvds and netflix, a spacious fitted kitchen with pantry, a boot room, cloakroom, shower room, study and a huge covered veranda with outdoor dining area. There are three bedrooms in this part of the house, all with ensuite bathrooms – one has a Superking bed, one with a King-size bed and one with two single beds

“The house and property are beyond belief, especially arriving after a long, dusty day on safari. We were astounded and I got a lot of brownie points for my choice! It’s huge, beautifully appointed, and has so much to offer. One could easily make a weekend of just staying at the house! Not that one would, what with all the wildlife to be seen in the area. Francesca, the chef was also very kind and on point with her general help. We highly recommend this place and will be back.”

Ian, Nairobi

The “new” double-height wing of the house features a fantastic open-plan games room with snooker and table tennis tables, television, bar area and sitting area with big comfortable sofas and fireplace.  It also contains a mezzanine bedroom with two double beds, plus separate bathroom downstairs.  The main house runs to 800 square metres / 8000 square feet – meaning there is lots of space and privacy for guests to relax and enjoy themselves.

In the gardens are a boules / petanque court, covered pergola and barbecue area. The perimeter of Mukima Ridge is electrically fenced with the internal 5 acres around the house also fenced.  The property is connected to mains services and other amenities include solar water heating, a back-up inverter and generator, borehole water and alarm system. Guests should note that friendly and well-behaved dogs and cats do live at the property.

All the attractions of Laikipia are easily accessed from the house which is just 5 miles from Nanyuki Town. The beautiful Lolldaiga Hills Ranch and Conservancy is just 20 minutes’ drive away, while Ol-Pejeta Conservancy, Solio Ranch, Mount Kenya National Reserve and Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and several other wildlife and wilderness areas are within easy reach.

“If you are looking to get away and have a comfortable stay, especially with kids, this is the place to go. Plenty of water, power and internet. Great game room set off from the rest of the house, so they can be loud and not affect anyone else. The movie room was also a hit with everyone there is a huge DVD collection as well as Netflix. The staff are incredibly well trained to take care of you and prep the house each evening and morning. The whole house is beautiful and comfortable. With a large outdoor veranda with plenty of seating facing Mt Kenya, you could spend the whole day there. Seating for meals inside and out, also you can enjoy a fire inside and out.”

Laikipia

Mount-Kenya

Laikipia

Situated to the North West of Mount Kenya, the Laikipia plateau is one of Africa’s most exciting and exclusive wilderness safari destinations – combining abundant wildlife, spectacular scenery, extraordinary cultural and bio-diversity, some of East Africa’s most successful nature and game conservancies – and a complete absence of package tourism.

The ‘Laikipia experience’ comes largely free of the constraints that often apply in Kenya’s national parks and reserves. Activities such as night game drives, nature walks, bike tours, horse-riding and camel treks – prohibited in most parks – are just some the exhilarating pursuits on hand in the extensive private reserves and game conservancies that make up much of the region.

Lolldaiga Hills

Laikipia hosts a wealth and diversity of wildlife – second only to the Masai Mara in Kenya. It has significant populations of predators and also the “Big Five”, with over 50% of Kenya’s black and white rhinos, thousands of elephants, about 25% of the world’s Grevy Zebras, and an increasing population of rare Wild Dogs. The region is home to more endangered species than anywhere else in East Africa.

From Nanyuki and its environs there are numerous excursions , game drives and cultural visits that can be organised to neighbouring reserves, safari lodges and private ranches – such as Lolldaiga Hills Ranch, Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Solio Ranch and Mount Kenya National Park. Riding, climbing, trekking, flying, white-water rafting, fly-fishing, polo, golf, mountaineering and many other sports and activities are also available close by. For more information on the flora and fauna and conservation of the region please visit the website of the Laikipia Wildlife Forum www.laikipia.org.

Nanyuki

Nanyuki

The gateway to Laikipia and Kenya’s northern territories, the busy market town of Nanyuki was founded in 1907 and still retains a distinctly old-fashioned charm.  Dominated by the peaks of Mount Kenya, Nanyuki sits at 1,950 metres above sea level – making it one of the 15 highest towns in Africa – and the Equator runs across the main road just to the South of the town.

Nanyuki Equator

These days Nanyuki is home to the Kenyan Air Force and to the British Army in Kenya, and there are several good places to visit, shop and eat in the town – including the Lily Pond Arts Centre, Le Rustique and Cape Chestnut. At Nanyuki Airport you will find the popular Barney’s restaurant and just across the road One Stop Nanyuki has a café and excellent delicatessen. In the centre of town you will find a branch of Nakumatt , a Dormans Café and a Blue Rhino gift shop.

“Ol-Bobongi is incredible – elegant, comfortable, magnificently decorated, thoughtfully organized and breathtakingly beautiful! Literally every detail was perfect, from the bouquets of roses left in the master bedroom and front hall, the delicious and ample breakfasts, the wonderful cooking of the kind and and caring staff, the polite, affectionate and well-behaved cats and dogs, and, most of all, the tranquility and beauty of the surroundings. The house’s gorgeous wrap-around veranda looks out over gardens lush with flowers – so much fragrant lavender! – up to Mount Kenya. The bathtub in the master bath is exquisite, and there is an entire film screening room with hundreds and hundreds of DVDs to choose from! We had each meal of the day at a different beautifully-set table. It was a chance to feel like a well-cared-for millionaire for a weekend!”

“We had an amazing time at Ol Bobongi!! We were well cared for by the team and the hosts were very warm and welcoming! They were also kind enough to take us on safari in their own vehicle, and they made our stay very comfortable. I have recommended Ol Bobongi House to our friends and colleagues, and I’m sure they will have many more visitors!”
