Acacia House and Mara House, Mara North Conservancy
Two unique private houses with swimming pool in the heart of the bush, Acacia House and Mara House offer a very exclusive safari experience well away from the crowds. Generous all-inclusive rates include private game drives and all kinds of other safari activities.
Acacia House and Mara House are located in the Ol Chorro Losoit Valley within the 74,000-acre Mara North Conservancy and make the perfect safari getaway for families and groups of friends – they can be taken individually for smaller groups or together for larger parties. In conjunction with the 2-bedroom Dik Dik House then can together accommodate up to 16 guests.
The houses are set away from the more well-trodden tourist trails and offer total privacy from the rest of the Masai Mara – but with easy access to the escarpment or open plains, both of which are 15 minutes’ drive from the houses.
“This was one of the most magical family holidays we have ever had, and this was due to the staff at Mara House just as much as the beautiful animals we were lucky enough to see. From the moment you arrive you are made to feel like part of the family – everyone is so incredibly warm and welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. The house itself is stunning and the standard of the food was just fabulous – every meal was totally delicious and always so fresh and healthy. Martin was our guide, and we couldn’t have hoped to have a more friendly and knowledgeable guide who clearly loves his job and the people he meets. We were lucky enough to see a leopard eating her kill up a tree (and that was from the airport on the way to the house!). We also saw some beautiful cheetah, elephant, giraffe, lions, hippos and crocodiles. Our children were totally transfixed, and so were we!”

The lush and undisturbed bush forest around the houses attracts a wide array of game and both properties have large verandas overlooking a waterhole frequented by a variety of animal and bird life. The slightly higher altitude and secluded location means a cooler, fresher climate and a quieter and more exclusive safari experience than the majority of the surrounding Mara ecosystem.
“I can’t begin to describe how wonderful this place is. The accommodation is great and we were so well looked after and thoroughly spoiled. Martin our guide was incredibly knowledgeable about all the wildlife and Richard the cook served delicious meals. We saw every possible animal several times including the endangered wild dog and there was wonderful viewing from the veranda. I could go on and on… a huge thank you to you all.”

A qualified guide and safari vehicle are on hand at all times to assist with a wide range of activities including game drives within the Mara North and Lemek conservancies, bush walks and visits to local villages and trading centres. Safari activities take place within the local conservancies and also within the Maasai Mara National Reserve (additional park fees apply) ensuring a wide variety of landscapes and experiences and excellent year-round game viewing.
“It is hard to overstate how good Acacia House is. It is incredibly comfortable, the bedrooms are spacious and welcoming, the kitchen is well-stocked with drinks and the porch affords a remarkable view of a watering hole that is regularly teeming with animals. In our two nights at the house, among other things, we saw dozens of elephants and giraffes. The pool, which also overlooks the watering hole, is elegant and private. The food is wonderful. And maybe best of all are the warm and accommodating staff. Our guide Martin may have the best eyesight in the history of mankind given his ability to spot game. We cannot wait to come back and will be sending friends.”

Location

On the northwestern border of the Masai Mara National Reserve, the 74,000-acre (28,000-hectare) Mara North Conservancy is a beautiful private wilderness area and a vital part of the greater Masai Mara ecosystem. It enjoys a stellar reputation for its abundant wildlife, quintessential East African landscapes of rolling savannah, acacia trees and riverine forest, and for its pioneering commitment to community conservation.

Established in 2009, Mara North is a partnership between 12 tourism providers and over 750 Masai landowners, who share a long-term commitment to the protection of the environment, wildlife and local communities. The MNC strongly believes in low-density, low-impact, high-end tourism and in minimising environmental impacts. The conservancy is accessed exclusively by the 12 member camps, whose guests are assured of a unique and truly privileged safari experience.

Mara North is home to several prides of lion and large numbers of elephant and offers excellent opportunities to view cheetah and leopard in the wild. A wide variety of adventurous safari activities are permitted including day and night game drives, horse safaris and scenic guided bush walks. Guests are usually also free to enjoy dinners, lunches, breakfasts and sundowner drinks in a variety of beautiful bush locations.

There are several scheduled daily flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to the Mara North Airstrip and the flight takes one hour or less, followed by a scenic 45-minute game drive to the camp. Private light aircraft or helicopter charters are also available.

How to get there
By air
There are 3 or more daily scheduled flights to and from Nairobi to the nearby Mara North airstrip on Air Kenya and Safarilink from Nairobi’s Wilson airport. There are often also daily flights to The Mara from Nanyuki and other Laikipia destinations and from the Kenya coast on Mombasa Air Safari. The airstrip is also accessible to private charter flights.
By road
The property is 5-6 hours’ drive from Nairobi via Narok and a 4×4 vehicle is required.
