Fig House, Kilifi Plantation

A really delightful, atmospheric and off-the-beaten track coastal retreat tucked away in a magical beach-meets-bush setting overlooking Takaungu Creek. With six enormous ensuite bedrooms, a gorgeous 25-metre pool and living and lounging spaces galore, it is ideal for larger groups looking for space, peace and privacy.

“The house is amazing, the views are incredible, the location is private, and everything is designed to make it a paradise. The staff are amazing and there to make your experience special. We enjoyed the private beach, the huge swimming pool, and the amazing food cooked by Hilary.”

“Our stay at Fig House was on all accounts flawless. The property sits on the edge of a very peaceful creek, with varying sea views from its many vantage points. The house itself is wonderfully spacious with beautiful finishings and an enormous and aesthetic swimming pool.”

“It was a joy to wake up and swim in the pool or the creek everyday, and then to enjoy meals prepared by the highly skilled staff (every meal was top quality). The local hangout spot less than a 10 minute walk from the house provides a uniquely jungly and relaxed atmosphere with a small shop fully stocked with anything you could feasibly need. There is also a coffee bar which serves very tasty local beers and smoothies, and a small restaurant / event space with delicious food. Freddy was very accommodating and responsive, and the house itself is certainly a stand-out stay on the Kenyan coast, and sure to become a family favourite for us.”

Fig House is quietly situated on Takaungu Creek to the south of Kilifi Plantation – a charming rural enclave of low-key sisal cultivation and dairy farming. Kilifi Town, Creek and Bridge are around 4km to the north. Within walking distance of the house is the ferry across the creek to Takaungu Village and The Food Movement with its artisan shops and places to eat. Also nearby is Kivukoni International School and the Creek Club which offers swimming pool, tennis, yoga and more.

Kilifi is a busy small seaside town with plenty of shops and services including a well-stocked Naivas supermarket and the Express Shop on Bofa Road which stocks more gourmet food and drinks. Here there is also a branch of Nairobi’s excellent Wine Box. All kinds of water sports and activities are available – from deep-sea fishing to snorkelling, water skiing and scuba diving – Kilifi Creek is home to 3 Degrees South Watersports Centre at the Mnarani Club, AquaVentures Dive Centre, Sunset Dhow trips and more.

Kilifi attracts ocean sailors and the creek offers a fabulous deep-water yacht anchorage and is ideal for boating and windsurfing. Larger boats can be hired from the Boatyard about a mile up the creek on the south shore, where there is a bar and restaurant. Other recommended places to eat are The Twisted Fig to the south of the town and The Food Movement in Kilifi Plantation where there are also various craft and food shops. Salty’s Kite Surfing on Bofa Beach to the north of the town also has a beach bar and cafe, and Salty’s on the Creek is a new floating bar.

Mombasa, Malindi, the ancient ruins at Gedi and the Arabuko Sokoke Forest – all make interesting day trips from Kilifi and all are within about an hour’s drive of the house. There is an excellent golf course at the Vipingo Ridge development about 30 minutes away – the course has been designed and built to the exacting USGA standard and is of international class. It has a spectacular setting, at the top of the ridge overlooking the Indian Ocean.

By Road
Kilifi is about 90 minutes’ drive from Mombasa to the south and 60 minutes or less from Malindi to the north. The inland route from/to Mombasa Airport on the C107 and C111 is uncrowded and scenic and avoids Mombasa island.

By Air

There are 2 weekly flights on Friday and Sunday on Skyward Express from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to the airstrip at Vipingo Ridge which is about 25 minutes away by road https://skywardairlines.com/

“Absolutely spectacular – we cannot thank the team enough. Fig House was just what we needed after a long safari. The views are something else – you simply HAVE to come experience it. The house creates incredible and varied atmospheres for all occasions – whether dining under the stars, swimming at sunrise, moonlit baths, relaxing in the sun or breezy shade – it’s just beautiful. The team are so warm and hardworking, the food is delicious and one is heartbroken to leave. Certainly we will be returning whenever we get the chance. Thank you all.”

“Fig House is pure heaven. The most epic coastal view, with cliff front privacy, within a beautiful plantation and a vibrant community. The staff were happy to meet all our needs, and we were made to feel at home. Thanks so much Freddy and Team. We’d love to return.”

“Freddy was super helpful and attentive, as were his entire team looking after us. I can’t recommend this place enough to be honest, a walk on the creek in the morning followed by swimming in the pool in the afternoon was lovely. The house is extremely well maintained and clean, lots of space making it ideal for a large family get away too. The food was excellent – Hillary was a very good chef who cooks superb fish curries! We will be back again!
