Speke’s Camp, Masai Mara

A traditional, small and very engaging bush camp with excellent guiding and game viewing away from the crowds, Speke’s is something of a hidden gem and a rarity in the Masai Mara. It sits in a secluded and shady spot on the banks of the Olare Orok River tucked away on the fringes of the National Reserve.

“We spent 3 wonderful nights at Speke’s Camp on a recent return trip to Kenya, having lived there many years before. It was a fabulous choice, a very comfortable camp in a stunning location with an excellent team of staff who are welcoming and attentive. We were met at the airstrip by Patrick and Mike and we spent 3 very happy days with them enjoying their great company and also seeing the most fabulous sightings. We were lucky enough to see several lions, 3 leopard sightings and 4 cheetah not forgetting numerous stunning elephants, giraffe etc. They took pleasure in choosing the most beautiful places to stop and set up breakfast in the bush and the breakfast itself was always delicious. The food at camp was beautifully presented every evening and always wonderful. We were hosted and very well looked after by Veronique and her husband Carl during our stay. It is clear that all the camp staff take great pride in their jobs and go out of their way to make sure the guests are well taken care of and happy at all times. It was a great start to our two-week holiday and we were very pleased that we chose this charming comfortable well run camp for those wonderfully memorable 3 days”.

Speke’s Camp is situated in a small private enclave on the boundary between the Masai Mara National Reserve and the private Mara North and Olare Orok conservancies. Game viewing takes place from the doorstep and game drives in the National Reserve which is a few minutes from camp.

Located in South Western Kenya alongside the Tanzanian border, The Masai Mara, together with the adjoining Serengeti National Park, forms one of the world’s most diverse and spectacular eco-systems. A region characterised by short grass savannah plains interspersed with areas of riverine forest and bordered by towering rocky escarpments, The Mara is home to an incredible abundance and variety of wild animals and is renowned worldwide as Africa’s most exceptional – and loveliest – safari destination.

The Maasai Mara National Reserve covers an area of 1,510 sq. km (580 sq. miles) at altitudes which range from 1500 to 2170 metres above sea level. The area has one of the highest lion densities in the world, together with significant populations of cheetah, leopard, elephant and buffalo, and this is where over two million wildebeest, zebra and Thomson’s Gazelle migrate annually. Home to over 95 species of mammal and 570 recorded species of bird, excellent ‘Big Five’ year-round game viewing is virtually guaranteed.

By air

There are 3 or more daily scheduled flights to and from the Musiara airstrip on Air Kenya and Safarilink from Nairobi’s Wilson airport. The camp is a 20-minute game drive away from the airstrip and return transfers are included in your stay. There are often also daily flights to The Mara from Nanyuki and other Laikipia destinations and from the coast. The airstrip is also accessible to private charter flights.

By road

The camp is 5-6 hours’ drive from Nairobi via Narok and a 4×4 vehicle is required.

“WARNING: if you decide to visit this place, there is a very strong chance you will want to return again and again, starting as soon as possible… This was certainly the case for us! We have just returned from a two-week holiday in Kenya, which included a three-night stay in this stunning place. I am not usually a fan of camping, but this is the ideal mixture of “glamping-meets-authenticity”. The tents are very roomy and comfortable, with ensuite bathrooms. As there is no running water in the campsite, you need to “order your shower water” from the incredibly attentive team on-site. I wasn’t sure about this at first but it really was not a problem and also encouraged us to conserve water, a principle we have always tried to abide by, but this time its importance felt all the more real/urgent. The food was amazing; we were really tempted to pack the chef in our luggage! Onto the safari experience itself. The guides the camp used are local and trained and as such are incredibly knowledgeable about the area, the species within it and where to find them. We were treated to breakfast in the bush, lunches in the bush and a sundowner safari with G&T. Simply marvellous! I have not yet mentioned my favourite experience: early morning in the tent overlooking a meadow where elephants, buffalos and giraffes meandered peacefully. We sat in bed for ages watching the very best animal documentary on a makeshift widescreen through the net! The camp is managed by a father/son team who are clearly passionate about Kenya in general and the Maasai Mara area in particular. We enjoyed getting to know them better. When it was sadly time to leave and our next booking was cancelled at the last minute by our next and unreliable host, they pulled out all the stops to help us arrange a very fine alternative. Kenyan hospitality at its best! Thank you, Hamish, Adrian and the whole team (especially our brilliant safari guides Ben and Charles) for an amazing, highly recommended experience.”

“We feel so privileged to have stayed at Speke’s. It is a truly special place. We are a multi-generational family with grandparents who had been safari-ing for 25 years, a son in law who had visited Kenya in his youth and me and our two girls, who were Safari novices. Everyone agreed that Speke’s was the best holiday they’d ever had. The camp is well situated – far removed from the jeep heavy more touristy areas of the Mara, but exceptionally close to a vast array of wildlife. We saw all we hoped to and more, which was thanks to the expertise of our wonderful guides, Charles and Benson. They are a superb team – Benson indicating with just a flick of his finger and Charles following his direction to find animal after animal. Not only were our sightings numerous, they were also close up and calm – we were the only vehicle at a lot of our sightings. Elephant, lion, leopard (two), cheetah (10 in total over 5 days), serval cat, giraffe, jackal, countless hyaena and any number of wildebeest (the migration meaning they were the ultimate fast food), hippo, antelope… Charles is a particular expert on birds and spends a month each year ringing migratory species on round the clock shifts, testament to the genuine appreciation both he and Benson have for the wildlife around them. They are two genuinely lovely guys and we learnt so much from them and laughed a lot, particularly during our evening sundowners on the savannah. The in-camp staff are equally fab. Hamish is a welcoming, knowledgeable and friendly host. Gordon oversees the service with skill and dedication – nothing is too much trouble. Johnson the barman mixes up a mean mojito, which we enjoyed whilst watching giraffe sashay in front of the camp. Leaky was infinitely patient with us as we negotiated the etiquette of a bucket shower. And we always felt safe due to the Maasai guards, even when we were woken up by the sound of an injured hippo being pursued upstream by hyaena whilst elephants trundled nearby. The food was delicious, particularly the salads made fresh with produce grown on site. The bar is well stocked with really decent house wine and a good wine list. Overall, a wonderful stay at a fantastic and unique place. Thank you, Team Speke’s.”
