“The Treehouse is an unusual and enchanting hotel – as tranquil in ambiance as the blanket of emerald forest and pristine beach that envelops it. The two dove-white towers are an architectural delight – built mostly without walls they offer 360-degree views over the Kenyan coastline. With its curved stairways winding their way to the roof, and a lack of straight lines and corners, the design gives a nod to Catalan architect Gaudi. The hotel was dreamed up by Kenya’s renowned stained glass artist Nani Croze, whose blue, turquoise, and purple-hued glass designs decorate the towers. The result is a light-filled mosaic of a building that is a delight to be within. The service was very thoughtful, and the staff were clearly proud of the place.”

Watamu’s wonderful Treehouse is situated on one of the loveliest and most unspoilt stretches of beach in Kenya. There are no large hotels or resorts nearby – only the occasional private holiday home amid the coastal forest. The Treehouse consists of two dramatic towers, linked by stairs, bridges and ramps – their inspiring and organic architecture affords a 360-degree panorama of the Indian Ocean coastline on one side and indigenous woodland, coconut plantations and creek on the other.
Each of the seven bedrooms at the Treehouse is unique, breezy and refreshing – constructed out of local materials and recycled glass, and furnished with big comfortable beds and fine linens, nets and towels. Accommodation is flexible and adaptable, and, in common with so much else at the Treehouse, can be arranged to fit guests’ requirements. Singles or couples can choose an individual bedroom, and larger groups or families can opt to stay together in one or other of the towers.
“Words cannot describe the incredible experience we had staying at Watamu Treehouse for our honeymoon. The Treehouse family are truly that – a family – who welcome you into their space and make you feel so comfortable. The attention to detail and extra effort made by Paul, Ellen and the staff to make it even more romantic was so appreciated. The food was just fantastic – fresh and flavoursome, and our kayak trip will never be forgotten, nor will walking in the mangrove trees and watching the sunsets and sunrises every day. Thank you to you all – we will be back for an anniversary one day!”

Kaskasi, the North Tower, has three double bedrooms – each is self-contained with its own balcony and bathroom. Two rooms have beautiful 360-degree views of the sea and forest – perfect for watching the sunrise, sunset, moonrise and stars. The third has an incredible view of the forest and sunset. Kaskasi also has a kitchen, living & dining room and rooftop lounge area. There are additional sleeping areas and the tower can accommodate 6-8 guests
Kuzi, the South Tower, has 4 bedrooms – each with 2 or 3 beds, bathroom, private balcony and private dining space. All the bedrooms have incredible sea views, and three of them also have views of the sunset and forest. Kuzi also has a kitchen, two group dining areas and relaxing lounge areas. Additional sleeping areas mean that Kuzi can accommodate 8-12 guests in total.
Each tower has a choice of several scenic verandas, relaxing lounge areas and a sublime rooftop space – all designed to accommodate both communal activities and private retreats. Downstairs under the trees is the organic and curvaceous ‘cool pool’ and a lovely private path winding down through the forest straight to the beach.
“The Tree House is one of the most unique guest houses I have ever stayed at. Views of the forest, monkeys playing in the tree canopy and seeing the ocean from every angle, with each room designed to catch the sea breezes. The Star Bed on the very top floor was a romantic nest with a panorama lookout to soothe any nature lover’s soul. The fresh healthy meals and juices were delicious, and activities like the creek float and SUP Board Yoga were amazing. Guides and instructors were friendly, knowledgeable and very encouraging. I would stay again in a heartbeat.”
A stay at the Treehouse is designed to be as effortless and relaxing as possible – with the convenience of making your own schedule – or of having absolutely no schedule at all. A friendly, experienced and hospitable team of staff are always on hand to tailor your stay to your requirements – with meals, activities and excursions taking place when and where you want them.
Meals can be served in several charming dining areas inside and out, and the emphasis is always on superbly healthy, natural and delicious food. Guests can choose from vegetarian or vegan dishes – together with excellent fresh fish and seafood. Start the morning with fruit and freshly-squeezed juices. Enjoy a full breakfast with specials such as coconut or buckwheat pancakes, coastal coconut beans, avocado toast, quinoa breakfast porridge, home-made muesli and yoghurt.
Lunches and dinners often consist of delicious and nutritious soups, salads and seafood main courses. At dusk, enjoy sundowner snacks and a smoothie or a glass of wine as you experience the magic of a Watamu nightfall. Most dishes are sugar-free, wheat-free, nutrient-rich, very fresh and very energising. Dairy-free and gluten-free diets can be accommodated, and the chef will be pleased to customise meals to guests’ tastes and requirements.
“The Treehouse is amazing – one of the most peaceful places I have ever stayed and absolutely beautiful. Paul the owner and all the staff made sure all our needs were taken care of. The food was all healthy and all DELICIOUS. The location is wonderful – 3 minutes walk down to the beach. I will be back again!”
Yoga is a major focus at the Treehouse – it is the perfect place for a relaxing and energizing yoga class or a full yoga retreat in harmony with the elements. The top floor 360-degree yoga room was purpose-built for yoga at the highest point in Watamu, and there are numerous other places to do yoga in nature – under the trees, on the beach, on paddleboards or exposed sandbars. Please get in touch for the latest schedule of classes and retreats – or to organise a custom yoga retreat for your own party.
The Treehouse team can help organise a number of other optional activities. These include gentle expeditions by kayak or SUP (stand-up-paddleboard) and sunset dhow trips around Mida Creek. Trained masseuses can massage clients in their rooms or on the roof at reasonable prices. There are walks on the beach, through magical mangrove forests, to the nearby Arabuko Sokoko forest reserve and local villages. Snorkelling in the offshore Coral Gardens is superb. Watamu is also great for kite-surfing, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing and other water sports.
