Mukima House was built on a grand scale in the 1940s – and has been recently rescued, rebuilt and refurbished to the highest standards. Owned and managed by the same dedicated team as Lamu’s acclaimed Kizingoni Beach, Mukima enjoys the same exceptional standards of service and hospitality.

You can spend your stay at Mukima relaxing in the comfort and privacy of this splendid and traditional house, exploring the many activities and attractions of the estate, and visiting the local game parks and conservancies as and when you please.

Sitting at the heart of a 360-acre private conservancy, with wonderful views of Mount Kenya and the surrounding countryside and bush, Mukima comfortably accommodates 18 or more guests in 9 ensuite double/twin bedrooms.

“Mukima house is simply amazing – spectacular views, grounds, facilities, great chef and very attentive staff. We had an absolutely wonderful time there – the house is beautifully appointed, wonderfully built and taken care of. The staff are extremely well-trained and tender to your needs in the most non-obtrusive manner. There are loads of options for games and activities and the view of Mt. Kenya when she decides to show herself is phenomenal. A wonderful place to stay…”

K.S., Nairobi

Downstairs accommodation includes an imposing entrance hall, central courtyard, comfortable drawing room and dining room with log fires, wrap-around verandas for outside dining and reclining, study/library with broadband internet, satellite television, dvd and games room. A first floor terrace facing the mountain is the perfect setting for scenic sundowners.

Mukima’s attentive staff will discreetly ensure that your every requirement is met. Meals are a delicious combination of international dishes and local farmhouse food – fresh and wholesome, they make the most of local and home-grown organic produce.

The Mukima team are also experienced at organising and catering for weddings, garden parties, conferences and corporate events, and can arrange visits and excursions to the area’s many attractions.

“I have stayed at this beautiful property a few times and it is one of my most favourite places in the whole world. The house itself is beautiful. The views from the verandas and balcony are absolutely stunning. To see Mt. Kenya at dawn has to be one of THE experiences. The staff are delightful. The food is simple but delicious. Nothing is ever too much trouble.”

In the grounds of the house there is a 4×14 metre oval swimming pool, a children’s pool, pool house with covered eating area, bar, sauna and exercise room with massage area. The clay tennis court sits to the rear of the house and has a shady pergola for spectators.

Croquet and badminton are played on the expansive lawns in front of the house. Walking and nature trails lead through the estate and down to the lake where there is boating and fishing. Inside the house there is a table-tennis and games room for children.

Mukima is also a paradise for ornithologists and attracts over 200 species of bird. The large dam in front of the house, fed by ground water from Mount Kenya, is a haven for egrets, ibis, storks, pelicans, various ducks and two breeding pairs of crested crane. Small herds of impala, reedbuck, steinbuck and bushbuck are breeding on the farm.

“We had a terrific time at Mukima House. Honestly I do not think anything could be improved at that place. The house and grounds are stunning and the staff were amazing – the food too! We’ll definitely try to return at some point!”

Laikipia

Mount-Kenya

Laikipia

Situated to the North West of Mount Kenya, the Laikipia plateau is one of Africa’s most exciting and exclusive wilderness safari destinations – combining abundant wildlife, spectacular scenery, extraordinary cultural and bio-diversity, some of East Africa’s most successful nature and game conservancies – and a complete absence of package tourism.

The ‘Laikipia experience’ comes largely free of the constraints that often apply in Kenya’s national parks and reserves. Activities such as night game drives, nature walks, bike tours, horse-riding and camel treks – prohibited in most parks – are just some the exhilarating pursuits on hand in the extensive private reserves and game conservancies that make up much of the region.

Muikima House - Loldiaga Hills

 Lolldaiga Hills

Laikipia hosts a wealth and diversity of wildlife – second only to the Masai Mara in Kenya. It has significant populations of predators and also the “Big Five”, with over 50% of Kenya’s black and white rhinos, thousands of elephants, about 25% of the world’s Grevy Zebras, and an increasing population of rare Wild Dogs. The region is home to more endangered species than anywhere else in East Africa.

Mukima House - Solio Ranch Rhinsoeri

 Solio Ranch Rhinoceros

The team at Mukima will be pleased to organise excursions, game drives and cultural visits to neighbouring reserves, safari lodges and private ranches – such as Lolldaiga Hills Ranch, Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Solio Ranch and Mount Kenya National Park. Riding, climbing, trekking, flying, white-water rafting, fly-fishing, polo, golf, mountaineering and many other sports and activities are also available close by. For more information on the flora and fauna and conservation of the region please visit the website of the Laikipia Wildlife Forum www.laikipia.org.

Nanyuki

Nanyuki

The gateway to Laikipia and Kenya’s northern territories, the busy market town of Nanyuki was founded in 1907 and still retains a distinctly old-fashioned charm. Nanyuki sits at 1,950 metres above sea level – making it one of the 15 highest towns in Africa – and the Equator runs across the main road just to the South of the town.

Mukima House - Nanyuki Equator

 Nanyuki Equator

These days Nanyuki is home to the Kenyan Air Force and to the British Army in Kenya, and there are several good places to visit, shop and eat in the town – including the Lily Pond Arts Centre and the Nanyuki Sports Club. Just north of town is the new Soames Hotel & Jack’s Bar and at Nanyuki Airport you will find the popular Barney’s restaurant. A little further afield are the Trout Tree Restaurant and Mount Kenya Safari Club.

Flights from Nanyuki also connect with the Maasai Mara, Samburu National Park, Lewa Downs and other safari destinations in northern Kenya – please check with the airline for details.

By Road

Driving distance from Nairobi to Nanyuki is 120 miles (195 kilometres) on good roads and the journey should take just over 3 hours. Mukima House sits approximately 6 miles north of Nanyuki and we will supply detailed directions as to how to get there.

“This is a really great place to stay – a beautiful location and house with access to all the top game and mountain locations as well as being near to Nanyuki town for shopping and more. Very good food and kind support from discreet staff who really are there to help but not intrude in any way. Lovely walks and good bird watching with some game on the small conservancy. Highly recommended for safaris with family and friends and a great base from which to explore Laikipia.”

David, Nairobi

“This house is something so unexpected and beautiful. The building itself is so stunning and the rustic wood and beautifully finished rooms blow your mind. The size and space of the house makes it such a wonderful place just to explore and think. In the main bedroom get up early to watch the sun rise over Mount Kenya and see the wildlife starting their days on the lawn in front of the beautiful lake. After your amazing breakfast and fresh coffee you can lounge by the pool or start your safari in any of the many parks surrounding the house. I could go on and on about this amazing place – the people are friendly, the service excellent, the house exquisite. I am so blessed to have stayed here and could not recommend it more!”

Nothing is ever too much trouble. The gardens and pool area ooze peacefulness and serenity. Guinea Fowl on the green lawns. Birds to satisfy the most demanding twitcher’s needs! Whilst I am writing this I am getting major withdrawal symptoms. I have to go back very soon to have a sauna, swim, dinner and relax by the huge open fires..in that order.”

L.M., Nairobi

“This is a magical place. From the moment of arrival, the staff are completely attentive to your every need. The views of the garden, and onwards to Mount Kenya are stunning. We have stayed a number of times at Mukima, so for us its part of our Kenya trip, and it really does feel like a home from home. The food is exquisite, and the staff try very hard to find different spots in the grounds to enjoy dinner – from the dining room in the main house with a log fire burning, to the lawn outside, with the African sky as your roof. Whilst the ambience is one of an English country house, the surroundings are very much ‘Africa’, with Laikipia and its ranches only about 30/40 minutes away by car. Relax. Unwind. You cant help it.”

F.R., Nairobi

“We decided to finish our kenyan holiday here at Mukima House and it was the best decision we could have made. After a wonderful few days camping even in luxury we were really tired and feeling ready to sit back and take it easy. There is nowhere better! We were collected from the airstrip at Nanyuki in an old Toyota safari vehicle with open sides and drove past small farms with friendly people waving at us and the view of Mount Kenya tantalising us with its snowy top. Huge welcome from all the staff at the entrance to the old house and shown up highly polished stairs to a beautiful bedroom with antique beds covered in white linen and big fluffy pillows. Oh a fireplace in my bedroom too! From the windows I could see beautiful gardens falling to a lake and then the Mountain. Outside was a swimming pool and eating area surrounded by flowering trees, behind a tennis court. They have everything here; delicious food, such lovely staff, beauty treatments in house, sundowners from the veranda while watching the sky and the mountain turning pink. And daily picnics into the surrounding private ranches for game watching at a leisurely pace. The cares of the world seem a long way away from Mukima House”

S.W., Richmond, UK

“Many many thanks – staying at Mukima House was an awesome experience and we loved the place. Given our large numbers, it fitted us perfectly and we will definitely be back. Titus and team were superb and made it very enjoyable. You can be sure we will be singing Mukima’s praises to all our friends and contacts looking for relaxing breaks out of town!”
